Thousands rush to post offices to send gifts last minute

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC)--Less than a week out until Christmas, thousands are flocking to post offices to ship gifts in time for the holiday.

"We're seeing a shift in our type of mail," said Postmaster, Randy Lindman.  "A lot more parcels and not as many letters and flats as we used to get but our employees are working hard and doing a great job this year."

As gift-givers head to the post-offfice employees stand at the ready to direct traffic and check packages.  More than 10,000 packages were delivered to the Rochester area on Monday and even more are expected to be delivered on the busiest days of the season-Thursday and Friday.

"The system's going to be full. There's a lot of packages in there and anything after Thursday or Friday you're probably putting yourself at risk, depending on where it's going," said Lindman.

For some who utilize the USPS-the cost of shipping is just as important to factor in their holiday budget as the cost of the gift.

"I actually looked online before I decided where I was going to ship today and so that's why I'm coming here to the post-office-it was the most economical option I found," said Julie Petersen of Kasson.

The last day of delivery for the USPS is Christmas Eve.
