Tis' the season for icy roads. What's the salty solution?

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- The dichotomies of December. There's the naughty or nice and there's the salty or ice.  When Mother Nature is naughty you can expect the salty, everywhere.

"I suppose you go through a couple trucks, a person," says Greg Yocom of the Austin Street Department.

Whether it's the streets of Austin, or right down Santa Claus Lane, drivers are sure to see a lot of sand and salt around town.

"We get the sand and then we get the salt mix.  Then we mix it together 10% salt and the rest is sand. In town it's for traction.  Out on the interstate you know we have sweepers, they don't," Yocom said.

Major highways that take you to shopping destinations are protected by MnDOT.  They use a different mixture all together, no mixture.

"We use salt.  It actually has some melting ability to it," said Curt Kiefer at the MnDOT station in Austin.

For those of you dreaming of a white Christmas, MnDOT has those conditions covered too.  Tubes flow down the sides of their trucks dyeing all the salt blue.  Allowing for ample ice coverage.

"If one truck puts it down and the next truck comes along, we can see that it is, that there's something there, so we don't plow it right back off again," Kiefer said.

When you're driving this winter you better watch out and you better not cry.  Public works has got you covered, and I've now told you why.
