Sisters of St. Francis go solar

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- The sound of ringing bells is common during the holiday season, but Monday the bells at Assisi Heights rang for a very different reason.

At 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, the sisters of St. Francis rang the bells at Assisi Heights to signify the start of the use of solar power.

About 10 percent of the power year-round will now be provided by 600 solar panels, the largest number in Southeastern Minnesota.

The sisters say it's an environmentally-conscious initiative that reflects their beliefs.

"We as Franciscans have been working on, we've always been very very concerned with energy use, as St. Francis was the patron of ecology," said Sister Marlene Pinzka.

The sisters say they have already had inquiries from others in the area curious about using solar power.
