MnDOT snowplow driver: We see more crashes early in season

DAKOTA, Minnesota (WXOW/KTTC) – Snowplow crews from the Minnesota Department of Transportation took to the streets Sunday to make sure drivers had a clear path to travel.

They said the snow was easy to clear. It wasn't sticking. But there were a high volume of wrecks.

MnDOT Transportation Generalist Scuffy Paulson said he tends to see more crashes at the beginning of the snow season.

"A lot of people seem like they forget to drive in Minnesota weather," Paulson said. "Usually it takes them the first couple storms before they realize that they live in Minnesota and they need to slow down a little bit."

Especially if the road isn't cleared, they can likely spin out of control, he added.

According to Paulson, plow operators said the safest place to drive is behind a plow. That way drivers know the road is cleared.
