Heavy snow shuts University of Minnesota Duluth

Posted:

DULUTH, Minn. (KTTC/AP) -- The University of Minnesota Duluth will be closed Wednesday because of a snowstorm, a move the school rarely makes.

Lake Superior College in Duluth also is closed.

UMD spokeswoman Gina Katzmark tells the Duluth News Tribune that snow-removal crews work 12-hour shifts and then break for 12 hours, and the amount of snow expected means closure.

Katzmark says the fact that temperatures are expected to plunge later means the campus needs roads cleared out before the deep freeze.

The campus closed at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Snow removal crews are expected to work to keep campus roads open for emergency traffic.
