Best Buy's Black Friday more tame than years' past

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Sifting and browsing led to big sales Friday morning at Best Buy in Waterloo, without all the hassle of years' past.

The store had been open since 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, and once Black Friday takes its toll, it will have been open for a 28-hour stint.

Some shoppers woke up as early as 3:30 a.m. to check out the deals, and said they've been "doing" Black Friday for years.

"About 12, 13 years -- it's a family tradition," shopper Jessica Matthews said.

Best Buy General Manager Dave Parsons said hot items this year are tablets, along with gaming systems like XBox One and PlayStation 4.

Luckily, shoppers' elbows were down and no one was spotted gripping their carts for dear life this year. Managers suspect that may be because a lot of stores opened Thanksgiving night as opposed to early Friday morning.

Some miss the rush, while others said they enjoyed the tamer experience of Black Friday.

"It gets all the pushing and shoving out of the way," shopper Tim Stine said. "You actually have time to look around and look at what you're going to buy."

Other retail giants reported record-breaking sales this Black Friday.

Walmart officials said the chain served more than 22 million customers this Thanksgiving Day with leading items like televisions, tablets and towels.
