COPY-Family: 2 dead, 3 critical after car sinks in pond

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (KTTC/AP) -- Two of  the five children rescued after being trapped in a submerged car Thursday in St. Louis Park have died.

The Minnesota State Patrol says on its website that 5-year-old Zenavia Rennie of Brooklyn Center died Thursday. She was one of five children rescued earlier in the day from a car that veered off a highway ramp and into a frigid pond.

A family member, Tamy Johnson, said 7-year-old Alarious Coleman-Guerrido also died. The other three children are in critical condition, according to the family.

The incident happened around 6:15 a.m. Thursday. Guerrido was behind the wheel of the 1998 Pontiac Grand Am when it left the ramp from westbound Highway 7 to northbound Highway 100 and plunged into the pond.

Guerrido was able to escape the car but the five children were stuck inside. Witnesses and first responders jumped into the water and unsuccessfully tried to get them out.

It wasn't until a tow truck arrived and pulled the car out of the water that rescuers could access them.

The car was under water for up to 45 minutes.

St. Louis Park city spokesman Jamie Zwilling said the children were unconscious and unresponsive when pulled from the vehicle.

The driver of the car was the mother of some of the children and stepmother to the others. She made it out on her own. One witness described seeing her in the pond, screaming for help.

The other children are identified as 1-year-old Aliyana Rennie, 6-year-old Zarihana Rennie, 5-year-old Amani Coleman-Guerrido. All are from Brooklyn Center.
