WELCH, Minn. (KTTC) -- If Monday's snow didn't let you know that winter is right around the corner maybe this will. Welch Village Ski and Snowboard Resort is working hard to get the hills ready as quick as possible.
"You weather guys got pretty close on this one and it held true and it got cold for two days so we were ready to go a week ago," said Peter Zotalis, Welch Village Ski Services Director.
Ready to go meaning pipes checked, machines tested, and then wait for mother nature to deliver. This time she did.
Skies may be clear throughout much of southern Minnesota, but it's snowing at Welch Village. Our cold blast has provided rare and ideal conditions to make some of the white stuff and here they are making plenty.
"With the temperatures that we had last night we can keep the guns on 24 hours at a time. It piles up pretty quick. There was not a pile here in the morning. This pile was all last night," Zotalis said.
The last few Novembers have been on the milder side so this is a welcome change.
"We're pretty lucky this early in November to get a couple of days like this back to back where it is this cold. Looks like we're picking up right where we left off last spring when we got all of that snow in April or May. We'll take a whole winter like this, we're biased," Zotalis said.
And soon these empty almost snow covered hills will be jam packed with people itching to hit slopes from a long summer off.
"People in control, the management here we're all skiers and want to ski so we are going to try and open it as soon as we can," Zotalis said.
If it wasn't for this small warm-up coming for the next few days the resort was tempted to open things this week.
Depending on what the weather does, Welch Village may try and open next week. You can follow their blog for more details.
