CANTON, SD (KARE/KTTC) -- A South Dakota man could spend the rest of his life behind bars after being indicted for murder in the death of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson's son.
A Lincoln County Grand Jury returned the second degree murder indictment, and one for first degree manslaughter against Joseph R. Patterson in the death of Peterson's 2-year-old son. Sources say Peterson was preparing to meet Tyrese Robert Ruffin for the first time when authorities say the child was fatally beaten.
Tyrese died of head injuries suffered after his mother left him in Patterson's care.
In South Dakota both second degree murder and first degree manslaughter carry the possibility of life in prison.
Patterson was also indicted for aggravated battery of an infant and abuse or cruelty to a minor.
