ALBERT LEA, Minn. (KTTC) -- An Albert Lea man accused of burglary and killing a dog made his first court appearance on Thursday.

Trouper Gilbertson, 24, is charged with first-degree burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and animal cruelty.

Investigators say Gilbertson burglarized a home in the 400 block of Commercial Street in Albert Lea and cut a dog's throat on Sunday. The dog later died at the vet's office.

Police arrested Gilbertson on Tuesday after a gas drive-off. He was the passenger in the car driven by 18-year-old Bailey Mitchell. Officers say the two led them on a high-speed chase. Police also arrested Mitchell who is charged with fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and fleeing a police officer on foot.

Mitchell and Gilbertson are due back in court on Oct. 31.
