SARATOGA, Minn. (KTTC) -- Digging operations began this past week at the Nisbit sand mine in Winona County, and the frac sand in this pit will be sold for something far different than you might think.  The sand at the mine will actually be used for cattle bedding.

The soft texture and small particle size of the sand makes it perfect for cattle bedding.  The sand offers cattle a more comfortable night of sleep and is better on their joints.  Farmers say if you treat the cow right, then it will treat you well right back.

"Since we switched to sand from sawdust we have seen an increase of 15 to 20 pounds of milk per cow per day," says Ben Daley of Daley Farm of Lewiston.

After acquiring a road use agreement with Winona County the mine will open.  The owners estimate that could take about two weeks.
