Rochester fire crews extinguish axle fire on gasoline tanker truck

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Fire fighters in Rochester extinguished a fire on a tanker truck carrying gasoline just in time Friday morning.

Rochester fire officials say firefighters were called to Maine Avenue South, near the Mills Fleet Farm Gas Station, at about 6:30 a.m. Friday.

The driver of a Wayne Transport tanker reported that he saw smoke coming from the rear of his trailer-- a tanker contained 8500 gallons of gasoline.

The fire department says overheating brakes on a rear axle ignited a tire, and flames were threatening the tank.

The trucker tried a dry chemical extinguisher with no success.

Firefighters applied additional dry chemical until they were able to put out the fire with water.

Officials say fire crews stayed on the scene until the load of gasoline was successfully delivered to the station.
