Crews battle NW Wis. wildfire on state property

GRANTSBURG, Wis. (AP) -- Crews were battling a grasslands fire that got out of control during a prescribed burn in northwestern Wisconsin.

Department of Natural Resources spokesman Kevin Harter says the DNR burn was supposed to be limited to 400 acres but jumped to 700 acres Tuesday.

The burn was being conducted on state land north of Grantsburg. The DNR says no one had been hurt Tuesday and no structures were threatened or damaged.

Two tanker planes and a helicopter were dumping water on the fire.

The area includes marshes, grass and some woods. Harter says crews contained one flank of the fire and were working on the other.

Conditions are warm and dry but showers were expected to move in Wednesday evening.

Grantsburg is about 70 miles northeast of Minneapolis.
