Researchers believe another bear has died

Posted:

ELY, Minn. (AP) -- Wildlife researchers in northern Minnesota say another bear they had been tracking has apparently died.

The Wildlife Research Institute in Ely says the bear's GPS collar was turned in at the Department of Natural Resources facility in Tower. Researchers say "June" the bear was liked killed.

Minnesota Public Radio News says it's not immediately clear if that's the case, or if the bear simply lost her collar.

Two other research bears have been shot this month including one animal killed Sept. 13 and another injured on Sept. 5. Minnesota's bear hunting season runs through Oct. 13. The DNR has advised hunters not to shoot collared bears, but it is not illegal.
