"Heat's On" event makes sure furnaces are safe in Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -  This weekend's statewide Heat's On event aimed to help low income families, elderly citizens, and disabled residents have a chance to have their furnaces checked for free.

Officials say having your furnace serviced can decrease costs, improve efficiency, but also keep you safe. The group was one day too late last year, and one family was hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning the day before the event.

Saturday, contractors from local 6 Pipe Fitters went into homes to check it all out.  The work on the home we saw Saturday was funded by Three Rivers Community Action.  The owner of the home was surprised by what was found.

"I hadn't noticed anything, and this man, this brilliant person with his assistant, you know, found all this stuff which was free.  He fixed it, and he is coming back to fix a little bit more," says Donna Melin.

Over the past 27 years the group has provided more than 31,000 hours of service from this event.  They say that, "If you can't remember the last time you had your furnace checked, then it's time to get it checked."
