NORTHWOOD, Iowa (KTTC) -- Authorities have released more information about a man in northern Iowa who died while being detained on suspicion of abuse.
The state Department of Public Safety says Michael Lee Zubrod, 44, became unresponsive Sunday night after local law enforcement detained him during a domestic assault incident involving a woman.
The Worth County Sheriff's Department says three deputies attempted to subdue Zubrod as he attacked a 48-year-old woman at a home in Northwood. They say Zubrod used scissors and a hammer.
Deputies eventually handcuffed Zubrod behind his back and applied leg shackles. He became unresponsive while on the floor, and paramedics were unable to revive him.
The woman remains in fair condition at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester with stab wounds and blunt force injuries. Full autopsy results on Zubrod are pending.
