Friends and family gather in Rochester to pray for fallen bluff hiker

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Friends and family gathered at Mayo High School on Thursday night to pray for Zack Nelson, the 23-year-old man from Rochester who remains in critical condition after falling from a bluff near La Crosse on Friday.

Nelson was rushed to Gundersen Lutheran hospital after falling 70 feet.  Nelson and his friends were hiking on a trail near Highway 16 when he lost his balance and fell down the bluff.

Nelson, a 2009 graduate of Mayo High School, has been visited by family and friends all week.

"It's just really up and down but the support we've had-I can feel it. They can feel it all the way over in's just been a miracle," said Mary McCoy, a friend of Zack.  "There's been a lot of miracles."

A miracle is what "Zack's Prayer Warriors" are hoping for.  His family says they've been witnessing them all week as Zack continues to defies the odds.

"He can make anyone smile-he's a really incredible guy," said Brandon Fieck, Zack's cousin.

"He's a wonderful friend-I just want everyone to keep praying for him, to keep him in your thoughts. You know, pray for everyone else in those hospitals," said Healory Mejia, a Friend of Zack.  "Zack may just be another person to everyone else, but he's my friend and I just want to make sure everyone holds him close to their hearts."

Along with prayers and well wishes-friends and family sent healing words in letters to Zack and his family.  According to family, Zack showed some signs of improvement on Thursday, though he still has a long recovery.
