ELK RUN HEIGHTS (KWWL) -

A Waterloo man faces arson and other charges following a fire at an Elk Run Heights business that damaged several vehicles.

An Evansdale police officer saw a van sitting unattended in the 4900 block of Lafayette Road at around 11:39 p.m., according to Capt. Rick Abben with the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office.

About 30 minutes later, the Evansdale officer then saw the van moving and made a traffic stop.

Then, at around 12:10 a.m. Wednesday -- about a minute or so after the traffic stop was made -- Black Hawk County deputies and Waterloo firefighters were called to 5043 Lafayette Road in Elk Run Heights for a report of a fire.

Once on scene, officers found that three trucks had been set on fire and an arson investigation began.

The driver of the van -- Steven Randall Edwards, 31, of Waterloo -- was arrested on charges resulting from the traffic stop.

Abben said evidence found in Edwards' van matched evidence found at the fire scene.

In all, Edwards faces six charges including one count of third-degree burglary, three counts of first-degree criminal mischief, one count of fifth-degree criminal mischief and one count of second-degree arson.

Edwards is a former employee of the business where the fire occurred, according to Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson.

The investigation continues.
