LA CROSSE, Wis. -- A Rochester man remains in critical condition Monday after falling from a bluff in La Crosse Friday afternoon.
Zack Nelson, 23, a graduate of Mayo High School, fell nearly 70 feet from a bluff off of a trail near Highway 16 just after 1:30 p.m. Friday.
According to authorities, he was hiking with friends in an unrestricted area when he fell. A CaringBridge website set up by Zack's family says that he lost his balance and fell down the bluff.
Rescuers found the man after about 10 miniutes, but it took nearly 90 minutes to bring the man safely down the bluff because of thick brush and trees.
Authorities closed down both northbound lanes of Highway 16 during the rescue.
A captain with the La Crosse Fire Department says it is amazing Nelson even survived the fall.
