Dodge County Sheriff's Office remembers Captain Loring Guenther

MANTORVILLE, Minn. (KTTC) -- Captain Loring Guenther of the Dodge County Sheriff's Office,  died unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 10, 2013.

"It's going to be tough to deal with all this and the loss of my friend," said Chief Deputy Mike Leonhardt of the Dodge County Sheriff's Office.

The flag over the Dodge County Sheriff's Office now flies at half-staff in memory of Captain Guenther and his 19-years of service to the community.  According to colleagues, Captain Guenther could often be heard whistling as he walked down the hallways.  They described their friend as "energetic" and "personable."

"No matter what the situation, he did it with respect and he treated people with dignity. That's what we strive to do, but he did it on a daily basis, that's just the way he was" said Leonhardt.

According to Leonhardt, Captain Guenther started as a Training Sergeant and quickly worked his way up the ranks.  As his career grew, so did his love for the community which he served.

For years, Guenther volunteered with Toys for Tots and last year he made a bet with his colleagues, including Dodge County Sheriff, Jim Jensen.

"If we got, I believe it was 100-toys in, we [Leonhardt and Jensen] both got tased, and I believe Captain Guenther was in on enjoying seeing the Sheriff get tased."

His sense of humor was apparent to others who met him in the community.  Jane Olive, a former Dodge County Commissioner, worked with Guenther on several occasions and said he always had ideas for improvements.

"He was always very crisp and very professional and he had all of his medals and braid on," said Olive.  "That's how I remember him-and his smile."

Funeral services for Captain Guenther are expected to be held on Saturday morning in Rochester.  Details pertaining to his death have not yet been confirmed by the Dodge County Sheriff's Office.
