Jefferson Award winner for September: Lenny Schleh

Posted:

ONALASKA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Lenny Schleh is a retired social worker who has been volunteering for a lifetime.

Lenny had a stroke last year. It's keeping him from sports for the time being but Lenny says that's when you have to dig deep. "I can't drive anymore but that's ok."

Lenny focuses on the positive, and sometimes the past, because sports is what made him who he is today.

"Track. That's what I was real good at. We were number one in the state."

About 30 years ago Lenny was teaching in Mississippi and met a few kids who never held a bat and a ball.  "You know you go through life. I can do this. I can do that. You can do anything you want to do so I just said I'll coach my time."

Lenny brought those kids to La Crosse to play in the Stars Tournament.  He mowed lawns and picked cotton to raise 400 dollars for the trip. Lenny also coached hundreds of kids in the La Crosse area.

He says the stroke didn't change things too much, it just moved him in a different direction.

"It's a tough situation but what are you gonna do."

Lenny teaches kids how to read and play chess. He even visits people who don't normally get visitors.  He's received a few dozen awards for coaching area youth.

And as for those kids from Mississippi, he still keeps in touch with them today.
