Winona couple celebrates 78th wedding anniversary

WINONA, Minn. (KTTC ) -- Two residents of Winona have reached a milestone that very few can claim as their own--their 78th wedding anniversary.

On September 1, 1935 Rinaldo and Angelina Dicenzo were married, and they've been together ever since.

"We're all happy. Wonderful," said Rinaldo DiCenzo.

Rinaldo, now 100 and Angelina, approaching 98, still share in playful banter and love taps.

"She tried to hit me, you see? That's her style of happiness," said Rinaldo Dicenzo.

Happiness is a life-long journey for this couple, originally from Boston, who spent years criss-crossing the country while raising 4-children. From Georgia to Arizona, they worked where they could find jobs.  Whether it be the gas station or grocery stores they worked in, whatever they did they did it together.

Two years ago, when dementia began to take it's toll on the husband and wife, their children decided it was time to move them into a nursing home.  The family toured 14-facilities in the area before settling at Lake Winona Manor-the only place that would allow Rinaldo and Angie to share a room, as they have for the past 78-years.

After a lifetime of being side-by-side, the pair is rarely seen without the other.  In fact, when Rinaldo wandered down the hallway one night without Angie, she was quick to go looking for her love.

"She was watching tv at the time and she came down to the nurses station and wondered where he was. And we told her where he was right down the hall and she said, "well he needs to stay right by me," said Linda Smith, an RN at Lake Winona Manor.

"As far as our marriage, it was always good. Never bad. He did things I didn't approve of but we went through it just the same."

"The care, comfort and togetherness that they were taught and that they have taught their children has been a remarkable thing to see," said daughter-in-law, Kelly DiCenzo.

With four children together, their family has multiplied over the years.  The DiCenzo's have 12-grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
