Kasson-Mantorville Dog Park funding

MANTORVILLE, Minn. (KTTC) -- Some residents have been trying to bring a dog park in Mantorville for years, but now one idea for funding it has caused some controversy in town.

The land near the Mantorville water tower was designated as a park back in 2010, and a group of citizens has been working on raising money to turn it into a off-leash dog park.

The city of Kasson has joined in, but all of the money to add fences and other necessities has to come from fundraising -- not tax dollars.

Now an Economic development task force has suggested donating $5,000 of money from Rochester's sales tax for the project.

Some question if that money counts as Mantorville tax dollars, and if a dog park is the best use.

The idea is still in it's early stages, so dog park committee members aren't sure it will happen.

"So as far as the Rochester tax money, we don't know if the Mantorville EDA will be able to donate that money to the dog park yet," said Bryce Gunderson a committee member.

The committee needs to raise about $15-20 thousand to get the park off the ground.

They're holding their third annual Bark in the Park event in Mantorville to raise money for the project this Saturday.
