Winona State Warriors start practice

WINONA, Minn. (KTTC) -- The Warriors held a brief media session this afternoon and then went to work at Verizon Wireless Stadium in shorts and helmets-- no pads.

Tom Sawyer is entering his 18th year as Head Coach of WSU.

His program is coming off a ten-win season which included a victory at the Mineral Water Bowl last year.

Last week in a conference coaches poll, Sawyer's squad was picked to finish third in the NSIC behind Minnesota State and Minnesota-Duluth, which is high praise for the Warriors.

Sawyer says he likes being recognized by the conference, but he also knows you still have to win football games, and that starts with the first day of practice.

Winona State will open the 2013 season at home; they host Bemidji State on Thursday, September 5. It's a 6 p.m. kickoff at Verizon Wireless Stadium in Winona.
