NORTHWOOD, Iowa (KTTC) -- A man has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of a Northwood, Iowa, woman.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says 39-year-old Tyrone Washington, Jr. is being held in the Scott County Jail in Davenport on $500,000 cash-only bond in the death of 30-year-old Justina Marie Smith.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday concludes Smith died from "multiple sharp force injuries" and classified her death as a homicide.

After the stabbing was reported late Monday morning, authorities began searching for Smith's car and found Washington driving the vehicle later that afternoon.

An Iowa State trooper saw Smith's Pontiac Grand Prix heading east on Interstate 80 near Davenport.

The trooper attempted to pull the car over and that's when a chase ensued. The car steered off the road and drove through corn and bean fields before authorities stopped the car by colliding with it. Washington was taken into custody.

The arrest came four hours after the stabbing was reported just after 11:30 a.m. Monday at Swensrud Park in Northwood.

Authorities found Smith stabbed and she was taken to Mercy Hospital North Iowa and later died from her injuries.

By Tuesday afternoon, flowers could be seen left at the park by mourners, many cars were also seen in the area. According to mourners who told KTTC they were friends of Smith, she was a mother of two in her late twenties who worked at the Casey's General Store in Northwood, Iowa.

This is the second stabbing this year in Northwood. In June, a man was stabbed during a fight on 7th Street North. He was treated at Mercy Hospital for stab wounds. Donald Monte Baker, 26, of Northwood, was charged with felony assault.
