Decorative lanterns cause roof fire at Rochester hotel

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- They're a common site at weddings, and are beautiful to look at, but Chinese lanterns are illegal here in Minnesota and here's why.

Two lanterns were found on the rooftop of America's Best Value Inn in Rochester Sunday after hotel employees said they smelled smoke.

Rochester firefighters were called to the scene at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

They say somebody had launched the lanterns, which then caused a small fire and destroyed rubber membranes along the roof of the hotel.

Fire officials say that even though you might find these decorative floating lanterns in some retails stores, they are illegal in Minnesota.
