AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- It's July, and most students are still on summer vacation.
But kids at Sumner Elementary School in Austin are packing up their school bags, getting pens and paper ready, and preparing to head back to class.
Parents and students arrived at Sumner's open house with questions for teachers and faculty. Class starts Tuesday.
Thursday's annual Back-To-School event provides students an opportunity to acclimate to their classroom, curriculum and classmates before the school year begins.
For Nicole Riemann, a mother to incoming first-grader Connor, the day offers some relief for parents as well.
"He was really nervous about going to a new school. He started getting kind of anxious and this actually helps me, getting to meet the teacher, knowing who she is because I've never met any of the teachers any other time," Riemann told KTTC Thursday.
Sumner students won't be the only ones to begin class Tuesday. 45/15 students at the Austin school district's Woodsen Kindergarten Center will also be headed back to the classroom.
