Unique music venue in Austin opens at Oak Park Mall

AUSTIN, Minn. (KTTC) -- A new music venue is set to open at Oak Park Mall on Saturday.  The Electric Lair is the brainchild of Ian Murphy and Chelsea Farr.

"There's no where, even in the surrounding area that you can do something like this unless it's a bar," said Murphy.  "It's really just to get exposure to the local artists and have somewhere where they can get a following."

The pair saw a need to broaden the music scene in the area, so they decided to open a place where people of all ages could enjoy all kinds of music in a substance-free environment.

"It's really exciting to know that so many people are looking forward to sharing our vision with us and to know that they're really excited that we're bringing this to the town," said Farr.

Joshua Whalen was born and raised in Austin with a guitar always close by his side.  Whalen will be one of 5 solo artists and bands performing at the grand opening.  Whalen said the venue provides a unique experience for fans and music artists.

"A lot of performances I've done has been in those kinds of environments where there's been alcohol and roundy people," said Whalen.  "This is an all ages venue.  No alcohol.  It's going to be great to be able to sit up there and perform for people who all want to come and see music."

Doors will open every Saturday night at 5, with more week-day performances planned for the future.  For a fee, customers will be able to relax at the mall while enjoying the music of local artists.
