MASON CITY, Iowa (KTTC) -- One man is dead and his son is in custody after a late night stabbing at a Mason City, Iowa home.
The incident happened Thursday evening on the 2900 block of 1st St. SW in Mason City. Police have confirmed 73-year-old Anastasios "Tom" Barlas, Sr. was found dead at his residence around 8:45 p.m.
They also say his son, 42-year-old Thomas G. Barlas, Jr. was taken into custody behind Hobby Lobby off North Taft Ave. in Mason City. Authorities say he is being charged with first degree murder. According to the criminal complaint, Tom Jr. stabbed his father in the chest with a knife.
Investigators from several agencies, including Mason City police, the Cerro Gordo Sheriff's Department and the Iowa State Patrol were on the scene.
A records search shows three people live at the home; Tom Barlas Sr., Kathy S. Barlas, and Thomas G. Barlas Jr.
The Barlas family has a long history of ownership of restaurants in Mason City and Clear Lake, with the two Barlas sons, Tom Jr. and George, currently owning and operating Chop Restaurant and 11 Lounge.
Tom Jr. will make his first court appearance on July 26. According to the complaint, bond was set in the amount of $500,000.
