MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (AP) -- The Minnesota Twins started the All-Star break by shaking up their roster.
Following Sunday's win, the Twins announced they optioned Chris Parmelee, Oswaldo Arcia and Eduardo Escobar to Triple-A Rochester. They will also call up catcher/outfielder Chris Herrmann and select the contract of utility infielder Doug Bernier. The third and final corresponding roster move has yet to be announced.
Arcia made his MLB debut this year, and after a hot start he has struggled lately. The 22-year-old is batting .257 with six homers and 25 RBI in 59 games, but is just 7-for-44 (.159) with 17 strikeouts in 11 games this month.
Parmelee has also struggled this year, hitting just .223 with eight homers and 20 RBI in 83 games. Escobar, meanwhile, has been the odd man out in the infield and has played just 55 games while batting .214 with nine RBI.
"They need to go swing. All of them do," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said after Sunday's game. "Escobar just doesn't have enough at-bats right now, and he's a young kid and needs to swing. You see Arcia and Parmelee are both really fighting it right now. We want their minds to get straight. They're going to be a big part of our baseball team in the second half, but right now they're going to go swing."
Herrmann debuted with the Twins last year and has played a total of 14 games in the majors. In a brief seven-game stint with Minnesota earlier this year, Herrmann was 6-for-13 with a home run and four RBI.
Bernier will be making his Twins debut, although he did play two games for the Colorado Rockies in 2008. In 92 games with Rochester this year, he batted .295 with 41 RBI.
