Elroy, Wisconsin (WXOW) --- This month's winner is Helen Milne and like many Jefferson Award winners before her the desire to help others grew out of personal tragedy. She says the experience showed her that just because you don't have money doesn't mean you can't have an impact in your community.
At one point Helen's husband was terminally ill, she had 3 kids to raise and she was broke.nd "We lived in a house with no running water. I couldn't afford a telephone. My son and I use to carry him in on a chair with a hole because we couldn't afford a wheelchair." So she did the unthinkable. "I made a deal with the Lord and I know you're not supposed to but I told Him if he would help me through this time in my life I would whatever I could for everybody I could."
And she's made good on that promise and to some far exceeded her end of the bargain.
Jerry Zirk nominated Helen. "She's the go-to lady. If you need anything she'll get it for you or know someone who can.
Helen collects soda cans and all the money raised buys winter coats and school supplies for local students. And she holds 3 yardsales a week at her church but getting approval from the town Mayor wasn't easy but certainly worth it. "In all the time I've been doing this I raised 50 thousand dollars."
What started out as a deal with God helped Helen Milne deal with her own problems and the problems of a couple hundred people in Elroy.
