Area Marine to be featured on national show

ORONOCO, Minn. (KTTC) -- An area man and John Marshall graduate is going to be featured upcoming National Geographic documentary.

Marine Captain Ben Middendorf will appear in the series called "Battlefield Afghanistan."

Ben Middendorf is a West Point graduate and now father of three.

He comes from a military family. His grandfather served during World War II, and his father was a Marine in the Vietnam war.

Earlier this year Middendorf was honored with the Leftwich Trophy which makes him the Marine Corp captain of the year.

National Geographic was embedded with his unit and follows the experience of Middendorf and the men during their time in Afghanistan.

"I think they're getting the inside perspective right along side because this National Geographic team where imbedded," said his mother Jorja Middendorf. "They were right beside them, and they get the first hand detail of what's going on and how these men feel and believe what they're doing."

His mother says Ben plans to be a career Marine.

The documentary will air on July 1 on the National Geographic Channel.
