Job seekers apply at People's Food Co-op job fair

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- People's Food Co-op is holding a job fair June 21 and 22 at the Rochester VFW.  The grocer is looking to hire 50-60 employees to work at their new 15,500 square foot retail space.

"A lot of people really like this company, so it's growing, it's becoming bigger and stuff," said job seeker Susan Gunneson. "I'm really excited about it."

The company used to be known in Rochester as the Good Food Store but in January of 2012, the store merged with People's Food Co-op and it's new location on 6th Street Southwest will be the company's first store in Rochester.  The company's other store is located in La Crosse.

"They work with local people, since it's a local place, a co-op," said Hayley Olson of Rochester.  "They buy from farms and stuff. I worked in a farm and I think it would be cool to see the process of how they buy from farms and they put it in the stores."

Supporting local agriculture is what the store says sets them apart from other grocers.

"We're a member owned business, so we have 6,000 members between the two communities," said Brad Smith, People's Food Co-op member services director.  "The people who shop at our store and use our goods and services are actually our owners and that's how the co-op model works."

Providing a good customer experience is why the store is searching for managers, assistant managers, clerks and others at their job fair.

"To have local products, verses going to one of the other major retailers in town, it's one of my first choices," said job seeker Ryan Balow.  "To support local and sustainable products -- it's very important to me."

The store is expected to open in early September.
