All Day Kindergarten approved for Rochester Public Schools

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- The RPS school board approves a topic that many across the state are now considering... all day kindergarten.

The district was hampered by the costs until the the legislature chipped in half of the funding for the move.  "It looks like it will be around $7-million," said council chair Gary Smith. "The new funding we got from the legislature this past session will pay for the annual operating cost. We're talking about a plan for the construction of the facility."

The district went through two studies to determine if all day Kindergarten is feasible, what it came up with are six different options.

On Tuesday it was approved that all day kindergarten will expand district-wide.  The big detail that still needs to be hashed out is when each school will make the transition.

Beginning next year the district will implement all day kindergarten to Bamber, Bishop, and Franklin Elementary at the cost of $1.3 million the first year to be paid by the district.
