Mike Benson challenges Tim Walz in 2014

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- A Rochester Republican is running for congress. State representative Mike Benson announced he is running against Tim Walz for Minnesota's first district seat. Benson has been a state representative since 2010. Meanwhile, Walz has represented the first district since 2007.

Benson kicked off his campaign Monday. He says he decided to run to change course and ensure a brighter future for the country.

He says he differs from congressman Walz most strongly on fiscal issues. "I'm a fiscal conservative," Benson said. "I think part of the issue behind a bad economy is just way too much government overreach, taxes that are too high and the uncertainty from a number of things that have been done over the past two or three years."

Benson says his campaign started making phone calls and sending letters to delegates Monday night to try and win the party's nomination.

A statement from DFL chairman Ken Martin says "As a state representative, Mike Benson has pandered to the far right in St. Paul. Now he has his sights set on Washington D.C."
