Memorial Day Events Across Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Events all across the area take place Monday to honor fallen military service members, including several in Rochester.

The day started at Central Park where a group of color guard members displayed flags while the marching band played. The parade went from 1st Avenue all the way to Soldiers Field. Hundreds gathered at Soldiers Field for a Memorial Day ceremony.

Cyril Kubista, a Korean War veteran in Monday's parade, says many who fought in the war never got to come back and talk about their experiences. Kubista says events like the Memorial Day Parade and the following ceremony give them the chance to do just that.

A wreath-laying event was also held in Rochester at the Center Street Bridge. A wreath was placed in the water for those in the Navy and those who lost their life at sea.
After that they went around to cemeteries to place wreaths to remember fallen veterans.

In attendance at the wreath-laying event was Wayne Stillman. He is the president of the Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial. He took time to talk about what Memorial means to him. He says it's not so much a time to be happy as it is to simply remember. "We can celebrate. Celebrate is the wrong word, but a lot of people do celebrate Memorial Day. We can remember and honor today and have all our freedoms," said Stillman. He says it's important to remember that the reason we have our freedoms is because of those that have died and been sacrificed for them.
