Classmates mourn boys killed in landslide

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (AP) -- Students at a St. Louis Park elementary school gathered around a memorial of stuffed animals, handwritten messages and flowers as they mourned two classmates who died in a landslide during a field trip to a Mississippi River park this week.

Gov. Mark Dayton told the students, staff and parents at Peter Hobart Elementary School Friday that he wished he could tell them something to make them feel better and to explain why the boys died, but it wasn't possible. The Star Tribune says Dayton offered his condolences to the assembly gathered in a parking lot near the playground.

Ten-year-old Mohamed Fofana and 9-year-old Haysem Sani were killed in the landslide at Lilydale Regional Park. Two other students were injured.

The city of St. Paul has hired a civil engineering firm to examine the site of the collapse.
