Forecasters say Fargo crest could be a week away

Posted:

FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- The National Weather Service is expecting the Red River in Fargo and Moorhead, Minn., to reach 20 feet above flood stage late next week, but the agency has yet to pinpoint the peak.

The summary released Thursday shows the river rising to near 38 feet by next Thursday. Forecasters say rising temperatures over the next few days could affect the timing of the crest.

The crest range of 38 to 40 feet for the Red River in Fargo includes a chance of scattered rain showers or thunderstorms from Monday into Wednesday.

High school students plan to place about 100,000 sandbags around Fargo on Friday, affecting about 200 homes.

The weather service says snowmelt runoff will flood farm fields and rural roads as it moves toward area streams, rivers and roads.
