CLEAR LAKE, Iowa (KTTC) -- A landmark in Clear Lake is coming down.

Crews are tearing down the 500,000 gallon water tower that sits along the sea wall near the city park.

Its been there for 64 years. Demolition began Thursday morning and crews are expected to finish some time Thursday evening.

The tower is being demolished because its lead-based paint is peeling. Clear Lake found the cheapest option was to tear the tower down.

For history's sake, the city is saving pieces of the tower with the words "Clear Lake."
