Paying it forward: Dozens of "Concert for the Angels" tickets purchased and donated

EVANSDALE (KWWL) -

Progress continues at Angels Park in Evansdale.

The park's design was inspired by the murders of young cousins Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins.

With a hefty price tag, folks have hit the streets to raise money to transform the island at Meyers Lake into space with lots of trees, flower gardens, gazebos and picnic areas.

Volunteers have been working on the upcoming "Concert for the Angels" event, a benefit concert scheduled for this Saturday, April 20th in Waterloo.

Every dollar from the event will go toward costs to finish Angels Park.

"We're starting to see a lot of people wanting to attend this event," said Promoter Sarah Werkmeister.

Werkmeister came up with the idea of a benefit concert in December, just months after her daughter was released from the hospital after battling cancer.

She said the kindness of others inspired her to pay it forward to the Evansdale community and start the groundwork for the memorial concert.

"Our community needs to heal," Werkmeister said.

She said in the past few weeks, others have caught wind of the "pay it forward" concept and have purchased tickets and donated them, at times to strangers.

"We started getting people from California to Massachusetts to Minnesota to all around just donating tickets or you know sending money," she said.

Werkmeister said more than 70 tickets have been donated.

"It's great to be in line at Starbucks and get a free coffee," she said.

"But it doesn't mean just drink that coffee. It means do it for someone else because you were going to pay for it to begin with, so do it for someone else...it's a snowball effect, and it keeps going and going," she added.

Werkmeister said because so many tickets have been donated, event organizers are able to offer a family discount for a limited time.

Organizers held a two-hour event Wednesday, where five tickets could be purchased for $50.

They plan to offer the same deal on Thursday, April 18th at Spicoli's Grill in Waterloo from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., and Friday, April 19th at Lofty's Lounge in Evansdale from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Werkmeister said anyone who would like to donate can contact her through the "Concert for the Angels" Facebook page, or by emailing her at sarahwerk29@aol.com

Donations can be made at First Security State Bank in Evansdale or Cedar Falls under the "Angels Park Memorial Fund."
