Former Kline challenger announces he'll run again

Posted:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A former state lawmaker who lost his 2012 attempt to unseat U.S. Representative John Kline is making another run for Congress.

Democrat Mike Obermueller announced Wednesday that he would once again run in Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District.

He made the announcement in a video sent to supporters. He said he'd focus on finding common ground and ending gridlock in Washington. His priorities would include rebuilding the middle class and protecting Medicare benefits for seniors.

Another Democrat, CaringBridge founder Sona Mehring, has also said she'd run for Kline's seat.

Kline, a Republican, has said he won't announce his political plans until summer and he hasn't ruled out a run for statewide office. Kline has won the district south of the Twin Cities six times, but redistricting made the area more competitive.
