In an update to the Iowa Senate, the head of the Iowa National Guard said there are 260 soldiers and airmen currently deployed overseas.
Adjutant General Timothy Orr said as Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom wind down, the National Guard is refocusing on organizational readiness and its role as a link between communities and the military in Iowa.
General Orr also said both the Iowa Air and Army National Guard have been at or above 100 percent of authorized strength for more than 10 years.
There are 9,400 Iowa National Guard soldiers and airmen who are serving currently.
