A big night of championship boxing in the Cedar Valley this Saturday as some Waterloo fighters step in the ring in front of the home crowd at McElroy Auditorium.
MMA legend Travis Fulton will take on former world heavyweight contender Jeremy Williams of Fort Dodge for the WBU title-- on a boxing card that also features 3-time Golden Gloves Champion Gregory Sykes of Waterloo.
For Greg Sykes, there is nothing more fulfilling after a hard day at his regular job than to come to the East Side Boxing Club to train for a couple hours. And Greg says life is really good when he is training for an actual fight, like the one he has this weekend against a veteran fighter from St. Louis.
Sykes said, "I'm always in the gym working out waiting for that phone call to hear that the fight is on so as soon as I get that everything just picks up in the gym everybody supports me at home so yeah it does bring a lot of excitement to my life."
Sykes has followed up his outstanding amateur career by winning his two pro fights by knockouts. Sykes' longtime manager/trainer Steve Rice has been working with the Waterloo native for eight years, and he says he still sees improvement in Sykes every day.
Rice said, "The improvement I see is his power--his power is really coming up, these last few months so we are going to try and put that to use Saturday."
At the age of 28, Greg got a relatively late start in the boxing game, but he still has big goals like one day contending for a World Title... that's why it's important for him to not only win, but also look good in the fights he's given.
Sykes says, "Yeah, that is the ultimate goal to be World Champion and this is just one small step to that.. we take every fight serious so I'll be prepared come Saturday...yeah"
Once again the Boxing starts Saturday night at McElroy Auditorium in Waterloo at 7 p.m.
