Rochester veteran to hike 2,100 miles

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- A Rochester Marine veteran will embark on a more than 2,000 mile journey on foot.

Kevin Reed will leave Saturday for a hike covering 14 states.

First, he'll catch a plane for Atlanta. From there he'll head to Amicalola Falls State Park in the north Georgia mountains where the hike will begin.

Reed will join 12 other veterans, who are hiking for the Walk Off the War Program to help wounded veterans.

"Nobody talks to veterans like veterans," Reed said. "We share a common bond and we've seen a lot of similar things."

Reed and his group will hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine and camp along the way.

Reed said a National Geographic special inspired him to take the hike, which he says will take about six months to complete.
