What a difference a year makes

WELCH, Minn. (KTTC) -- Night and Day, Black and White, how about last March and this March.  March 2013 is off to a much different start than March of 2012, and it shows by what many of us are doing outside.

Last year at this time Welch Village Ski and Snowboard Resort was closed because temperatures were way to warm to ski. One year ago Wednesday we were in 70s with no snow on the ground.  The warmest temperature we have had this year was 38.

Last March it was the greens, this March it's the slopes

"A year makes all the difference," said Welch Village Ski and Snowboard Services Director Peter Zotalis.

From the warmest March on record, to one of the top ten snowiest.

"We've had a lot of rain, we've had a lot of snow, we've had a little bit of everything. Now this is great," said Zotalis.

March has already provided us with over 18 inches of snow and with the mild winter last year and the up and down start to this year, all that white stuff is being put to good use.

"We're loving it.. Welch does a fantastic job and through January was really really really nice. This year, the entire year with the little snow we got right off the bat. We've been really really lucky," said skier Julie Miland.

"We've been skiing for years. Can't get enough of it," said 70 year old skier Dottie Hammer

This trio joins a few more of their friends every Wednesday to Ski, all of them over 70 years of age. Needless to say this recent of snow is keeping them well occupied.

"This is great, and last week was great. Everyday that it's not melted is a gift," said Hammer

No matter what your age though, for those that enjoy the rush of the hills, this fresh powder is welcomed.

"The fresh air, getting out I guess," said snowboarder Reese Dode

"Going down the hills, " said skier Aiden Browne

"Being out in this? It's Gorgeous out here," said skier Kirk Nelson

Gorgeous unless you're anxiously awaiting to hit those greens.
