DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard is warning ice anglers and others that changing winds and warming temperatures have caused shifting and thinning ice on Lake Superior, the Duluth-Superior harbor and connecting rivers.
Senior Chief Petty Officer Robert Pump says ice conditions are changing rapidly and are dangerously unstable. He says south winds and warmer temperatures over the next week will likely cause the ice to break apart and drift.
The Duluth News Tribune says the Coast Guard will being icebreaking operations in the Twin Ports area on Monday, making shipping channels and areas of the lake even more unsafe.
