Police in Cedar Rapids had some help fighting crime this week as unnamed citizens thwarted criminals in two different incidents.
On Monday at around 9:37 p.m., a clerk at Southside Liquor and Tobacco in Cedar Rapids locked a man in a restroom after the man attempted to take money from the register.
Police said Stephon Flowers, 21, of Cedar Rapids, grabbed cash and the clerk began struggling with Flowers.
Flowers allegedly punched the clerk several times, but the clerk was able to get Flowers into a restroom, locking the door from the outside and then leaving the station and locking that door as well.
When police arrived, they found Flowers in the locked restroom and arrested him for second-degree robbery.
In the second incident on Tuesday after 4 a.m., a 46-year-old man left his vehicle running while he went inside his home. When he returned, he told police he found a man had entered one of his vehicles.
Police said the man then jumped in the passenger side of the vehicle Jacob Blauer, 21, of Cedar Rapids, was allegedly trying to drive, and a fight ensued.
The owner was able to get the vehicle into park and get Blauer out of the car, after which Blauer ran away, according to the report.
Police located Blauer in another vehicle, arrested him, and charged him with first-degree theft for the first vehicle, third-degree burglary for being in the car he was found in, driving while barred, possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of prescription drugs and possession of burglary tools.
