Rough day for area teams at Girls State Basketball

Aplington-Parkersburg opened their first semi in 17 years against top ranked Western Christian, and it was a bit rough early.

Brooke Wolterstorff took the lob and turned it in to 2 points. Wolfpack led by 10 in the first, but the Falcons counter. Shelby Sindelar gets 2 inside, then a minute later Sindelar with the nice fake, drives for the deuce making it a 6-point game.

But before the half, Western Christian's Elissa Jansman dials in the triple. They led by 13 at the break, and they'd pull away in the second half.

Wolterstorff scores 2 of her team high 25. A-P's run ends 64 to 40.

"We can't really be sad because we made our dream and we did it all together," said Haleigh Hempen, and A-P senior. "We finished strong together."

Despite the loss, it was still a great run for A-P's all-senior lineup.

Maquoketa Valley, meanwhile, would look to keep their run going one more day.

But after an even first half, Wildcat fans saw their team ball behind Lawton-Bronson in the second. Josie Kopal's three put Lawton-Bronson up 6.

They'd lead by as much as 11 before Maq Valley came back. Count the bucket for Brooke Wooten as they'd pull within 8. Then Heidi Hoager gets 2.

They'd get it as close as 4, but it wouldn't happen. Ali Verzani hits on the other end. Wildcats fall 59-44.

"Tonight was a tough night, but the nice thing is they're going to be able to look back on it here in a couple years and be really proud of what they accomplished," said Scot Moenck, Maquoketa Valley Head Coach.

The Cascade faithful were hoping to break Thursday's slump, but that didn't happen. Davenport Assumption came in on fire.

Riley Behan dials it in from downtown. 24-8 Assumption early, and they'd keep it up.

Kate Fennelly launches it from the arc as they'd go up by 19, and they ran away. Another triple for Morgan Pavlich.

Cascade falls 63-26 on a rough day for area teams.
