Iowa House approves education bill, moves to Senate

State House lawmakers have approved a education plan.

Legislators approved the bill Wednesday morning in the Iowa House. The bill now moves to the Iowa Senate.

It's a scaled-back version of Gov. Terry Branstad's education plan. The plan aims to improve Iowa schools by boosting minimum teacher pay and offering bonuses to senior teachers who take on mentoring tasks.

Under the revision, school districts could opt out of the reform.

Lawmakers also approved an amendment to the legislation yesterday that would provide 2 percent increases to general school funding in the next two school years.
