ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- About two weeks ago, a Mayo Clinic doctor named Peter Hauri was out walking his dog when he slipped on an icy sidewalk in Rochester.  Dr. Hauri hit his head hard, but went home and spent a typical evening with his family.

A few hours later, he complained of a headache and his wife Cindy took him to the emergency room at St. Marys Hospital.  A short time later, he died in the early morning hours of January 31st.  Later, the medical team realized that Dr. Hauri had developed bleeding in his brain from striking his head on the sidewalk.

One of Dr. Hauri's neighbors in the Pill Hill neighborhood of Rochester called us at KTTC NewsCenter and asked us that week to report on the danger of the icy sidewalks in Rochester, asking people to clear them.  We did on January 30th, but never learned about the accident later that day that claimed the life of the well-known, highly-regarded Mayo Clinic researcher.

Now, what has happened since then has prompted another urgent request from the City Public Works Department.

The department's Michael Scharenbroich says the mix of rain and snow and the melting and re-freezing has made for very dangerous conditions with complaints coming in from whole neighborhoods about the icy sidewalks.

Scharenbroich suggests using a combination of both sand and ice-melt crystals to make your sidewalks safe for people out trying to use them to get around.

There are two places in Rochester where residents can go to take home buckets of free sand. Scharenbroich says one is near the downtown YMCA, and the other is behind Fiesta Mexicana cafe on North Broadway in the Northbrook Shopping Center.
